A passion for Christ

18 06 2009

After I have been in the discipleship program for half a year I can see how God is working through our discipleship program. Especially in one church I can see God’s work and I’m amazed about how this church’s heart is beating for Jesus. A while ago I was visiting the Pastor of this church and he told me about how he is going from house to house and does evangelism every Sunday after church. Enthusiastically to hear about his work I was asking him how he is starting a conversation with people when he just shows up at their houses. With a quick answers he just said: “Come with me on Sunday and you will see how it works.”. I wasn’t sure about that, but I answered Yes and was both excited and nervous how it will be. On Sunday afternoon after the service we met at his church which is in the middle of one of the worst areas in Gaborone. Drunken people were everywhere and I didn’t feel quite comfortable. But I followed the Pastor and we started our evangelism with the first house we passed by. It was incredibly amazing! In the midst of these drunken people, in the midst of discouragement, desolation and lovelessness people got to know God and even accepted Christ into their lives! We were able to pray for people and encourage people who have given up their faith to go back to Jesus, the only one who can comfort us, heal us and give us life to the full. When we finished up and were walking back to the church suddenly a man who was sitting on the ground called us: “Are you not Christians? Do you not even greet me? I also want to hear about Jesus, I want to learn more about him. Me and my family are Muslim, but we want to hear about Jesus!”. Feeling a little bit ashamed we went and shared God’s word with him. This man woke me up! How many people are sitting in this world which is filled with bitterness and lovelessness and are waiting just for us to greet them and bring them Jesus? Through this man God was calling me: “Don’t walk through this world with closed eyes, go to people who are in need and bless them with my blessings!”. As we finally went back to the church the Pastor explained to me how he will follow up with the people who have accepted Christ. He invites them to church and as they come to church he is going with them through our Discipleship program to let them grow in their faith. I could just be amazed again. This Pastor has one passion and that is JESUS. And as he follows JESUS he is obeying his commandment with his whole life: “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” (Matthew 28:19-20) May we learn something from this Pastor and not keep sitting in our comfortable offices, but go to the people and tell them about the only truth – JESUS CHRIST.
